BUCHANAN, N.Y. Election inspectors for the Village of Buchanans mayoral and trustees races say voter turnout is consistent but not overwhelming.
Its been steady, no lines, but one after the other, said three-year election inspector Christine Metzger.
We didn't have time to fall asleep, added election inspector Betty Chiffriller.
The thing is you dont know whats going to happen in the evening, said election inspector Rene Bracken. Bracken recently retired from her position as deputy town clerk, in the Town of Cortlandt. She said in the evening late voter turnout is driven by candidates calling supporters to ensure they've made it out to the polls.
Incumbent Democrats, Mayor Sean Murray, Trustee Nick Zachary and Trustee Richard Funchion, are running against GOP challengers Al Donahue, a former mayor, Angelo Iacomini and Ed Del Monte. Those men also are running on the Village Choice ballot line.
About 2,200 residents live in the village. The village has only two election districts, and both district's polling locations are in Buchanan Village Hall, 236 Tate Ave. Polls are open until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Village elections are one of the last bastions of the cerulean blue lever machines, as many voters know them. According to New York State Board of Elections officials, all races conducted by county governments must employ optical scanning machines. Optical scanning machines record votes digitally and keep a paper ballot in the event votes need to be recounted. School districts are the only other local elections that allows the use of the lever machines.
In the early afternoon, Funchion could be seen headed to the polls. Asked about the outcome of the election, he said, You never know, I think it depends upon turnout. He added, Anythings possible with the election thing.
