"Saturday Night" Fundraiser Supports Hen Hud Schools

MONTROSE, N.Y. – The biggest fundraiser for the Hendrick Hudson School District’s six PTAs takes place Saturday night. “Live From Hen Hud…It’s Still Saturday Night” features Mike Guida, a stand-up comedian and sergeant of the Buchanan Police Department. The fundraiser features thousands of dollars in raffle giveaways, casino games and entertainment.

Guida has been a police officer for just shy of 25 years, and has served in Buchanan for 21 years. The part-time comedian said he performs for kicks, and is excited to perform for a hometown crowd.

“It might lead somewhere it might lead nowhere, it doesn’t matter I’m still a cop,” Guida said.

Maggie Pinque, one of the chairs of the 23-member committee that organizes the event, said the greatest compliment the committee has ever gotten was from her husband.

“He said, ‘You guys throw a party that happens to be a fundraiser,’” Pinque said.

“It’s Saturday Night” is in its third year, and has raised over $50,000 over the course of the fundraiser.

The goal for 2012 is more than $36,000 to go toward projects not provided for in the district’s operating budget. SMART Boards, projectors and touch tablets were all provided to the district with money raised through the fundraiser.

Pinque said thousands of hours of organizing time “would probably not be an exaggeration,” since as soon as the event is over, next year’s is in the works. Pinque said from dressing colonial Terrace up with flowers from florist Diana Gould in Elmsford to coordinating sponsorship donations, the event is on a grand scale.

“One, I’m thrilled to support the district and the fundraiser themselves, but also I’m thrilled to see someone in law enforcement doing something on the side that he enjoys,” said Cari Daddio, dispatcher for the Croton Police Department. “Actually, one of my favorite things to do is see standup comedians, for me it’s a win-win.”

Daddio plans to attend Saturday evening’s fundraiser. She said although admission is $70 for dinner, dessert and entertainment, “If I were to go out on a Saturday night for dinner with my loved ones we would be spending at least that, if not more.”

Pinque said the event has room for a little under 40 more people and they would have to sit in the remaining available seats. Nevertheless, she said organizers won’t turn down last minute attendees.
