Larger Public Hearing Signs After Citizen Request

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Cortlandt residents will see bigger signs announcing public Planning Board hearings because of the insistence of one resident that the signs were illegibly small.

Supervisor Linda Puglisi unveiled the new signs at a Town Board meeting last week. Puglisi joked with resident, John DeBenedictus, saying, “If you want it any bigger, you’ll need a special permit.”

A clearly pleased DeBenedictus thanked Puglisi and the board for following up on his request.

Public hearings in the town frequently have little or no public input, often the only people attending the meetings are developers and the board itself.

“When a citizen comes up to the podium and makes a request, we try our best to meet that request,” said Puglisi. The new signs are approximately three feet tall by four feet wide. The orange, “PUBLIC HEARING” signs are posted in front of a property which is in the beginning stages of development.

The beginning stages of development require that a public hearing be held for a variety of permits, before the Planning Board and Town Board give approval to seek building permits. The municipal process is part of a check and balance system which requires public input before development takes place on the town level.
