CORTLAND, N.Y. - Convicted cop killer George Villanueva, 43, was sentenced to 28 ½ years to life in prison for shoving and fatally injuring a New York City police officer from Cortlandt during a domestic dispute on a Brooklyn stoop in March 2011.
Villanueva pushed Officer Alain Schaberger over a railing into a concrete basement stairwell while Schaberger was attempting to handcuff him, according to a report from the Brooklyn District Attorney's office. Schaberger was pronounced dead at Lutheran Hospital from massive head injuries.
Villanueva was convicted of criminal contempt and aggravated manslaughter, but not of intentionally murdering Schaberger, on May 2, 2012.
Schaberger served in the Navy from 1991 to 2001 and had been a New York City police officer since July of 2001, according to published reports. A tree was planted in his memory at Cortlandt Town Hall in April of 2011.
