Hen Hud Hosting Annual Debate Tourney This Weekend

MONTROSE, N.Y. – There’s no debate about what the biggest event in town is this weekend.

The 46th Annual Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament is in full swing this weekend at Hendrick Hudson High School.

The event is being held Saturday and Sunday, instead of beginning on Friday out of respect for Veterans Day.

Hundreds of students will take part in varsity and novice level Lincoln-Douglas Debates and varsity and novice level public forum debates. The event is known for offering strong competition, good food for both debaters and judges, and student housing, which got the Bump tournament honored as the National Debate Coaches Association's 2011 Tournament of the Year.

Volunteer Director Paula Barra said the event is a community effort, with volunteers housing debaters, making food, and businesses either giving big discounts or donating food.

“It really is incredible how prominent this tournament is in the debate world. How popular it is with debaters and judges. How well known nationally our coach is and especially how the entire community kicks in to host the tournament,” Barra said.

Countless alumni and former Hendrick Hudson debaters come home from colleges this weekend to judge and help out, Barra said.

The event will resume Sunday morning at 8 a.m. before finishing in the early afternoon.
