Croton Polling Places Throughout Village

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.  – Despite a number of uncontested races in the Town of Cortlandt, threatening to depress voter turnout, election inspectors in the village of Croton remain optimistic about voter turnout.

“I do feel locally a lot of people do come out here,” said election inspector Lucille Colletti. She said that many voters appeared to be comfortable with the new voting machines already, but that town elections had confused some Croton residents, all of whom come to the village hall for village elections, but have many different polling places for town elections.

“If they’re in the wrong place, and we have to bring them to a new place, they’re fine,” said Colletti. Colletti and her fellow election inspector in the municipal building had been supplied with a handheld device, by the Board of Elections, which has every voter’s name and polling place, and even prints out a receipt sized map to the voter’s correct polling place.

Colletti estimated that about 50 percent of the voters showing up to the municipal building on Tuesday were actually supposed to go to a different polling location. There are 39 election districts in the town of Cortlandt, the municipal building in Croton represents Districts 7, 9, 19, 32 and 39. Other polling locations in the village include the Skyview Haven Nursing Home on Albany Post Road, the Chemical Engine Firehouse, on Grand Street, and Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church on Cleveland Drive.

Other election inspectors didn’t feel as confident as Colletti about turnout, Stan Wiengast said that “it seemed a little on the slow side, even compared to local elections.” He added that most people come to vote “before and after work,” but that many people didn’t show up before work.

Voter Jeff Kellgren also said that “it looks a little bit slow, but I see quite a few people I know.” He added that voting is “the thing to do, I have candidates I want to see in office.”
