A Wait Expected In District 1 Independence Primary

PEEKSKILL -- Unlike most other primary elections Tuesday night, the results of the Independence party District 1 county legislator race likely won't be determined for some time.

Westchester District 1 is comprised of Peekskill and parts of Cortlandt and Yorktown. Both Republican County Legislator John Testa and his challenger Democrat Mike Kane were running as write-in candidates after Peekskill Republicans sued to have Kane and other Peekskill Democrats stripped of the endorsement due to invalid signatures. The Westchester Independence Party had endorsed Kane and the entire Peekskill Democratic slate but only Common Council candidate Darren Rigger remains on the Independence Party line in the November general election.

Kane said Tuesday night that he expected a long wait. "I think it's going to be a couple of days," Kane said.

Kane said there had been a low turnout from what he had seen during the day. "District 1 had four votes by 5 p.m. this afternoon," Kane said. It will be probably be a total of about 100 votes."

Calls to Testa were not immediately returned. Check back for updates on this ongoing story.
