Croton Veteran Charles Flaherty Dies at 89

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Charles H. Flaherty, of Croton-on-Hudson, died Dec. 16 after a brief bout with cancer, surrounded by family at his home in Half Moon Bay. He was 89. 

Born on Nov. 23, 1922 in Portland, Maine, he graduated from South Portland High School in 1940 and from Northeastern Business College in 1954. During World War II, Flaherty served in Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific. 

He continued his affiliation with the military during his long career as a supervisor at the Armed Forces Entrance Station in Portland.

Mr. Flaherty moved to Croton in 2001 to be near his son's family. He was a regular at Mohansic Golf Course in Yorktown Heights, where he played up until this past August with his friend Rocco Orsino.

He is survived by his daughter Janice Flaherty Muller of Chino Hills, Calif., his son Robert (Tommy) Flaherty and three grandchildren. He was predeceased in 2004 by his wife of 52 years, Rose (Morin) Flaherty.

Visiting hours will be on Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a service at 7 p.m., at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine.
