Letter to The Editor:
As a third-generation Crotonite I put Croton-on-Hudson first rather than putting my party first. I classify myself as an independent Democrat because I have agreed with the Democratic Party more than I have disagreed with them on the issues, in the six years since I became active in village affairs and began attending village board meetings. I think the current board has done a good job over the last three years of keeping taxes low without impacting vital services.
Despite aligning myself with the village Democrats on issues of policy, I am willing to act independently on what I believe is best for the village. Last year, without the support of any party, I helped lead the referendum campaign to move village elections from March to November. Despite the absence of party support, I persuaded the public to pass the referendum with 57 percent of the vote.
In March when I announced my candidacy for village trustee, Democratic Party leaders chose not to endorse my candidacy. As former Trustee Tom Burniston pointed out two weeks ago, if it wasnt for my independence there would not be a contested election this year for village trustee, since the Croton Republicans have decided not to nominate any candidates.
I believe being a good Crotonite is more important than being a good Democrat, and if voters give me the opportunity to serve as a village trustee, I wont let them down.
