Peekskill Farmer's Market Starts New Harvest

Saturday morning saw the beginning of a new season of the Peekskill Farmers Market, held as always on Bank Street.

The weekly market is among the oldest in the area and attracts approximately 13 local vendors, according to market manager and Peekskill Business Improvement District (BID) assistant Marilyn Ettinger.

"I've been doing this 16 years and the farmers market itself, I believe, is in it's 22nd year," Ettinger said. "We were among the first markets in the area."

The origins of the market go back to a local breadmaker who is no longer associated with the market, she said.

"We had a breadmaker that used to go down to the city [markets] and he got tired of going to the city to sell so he said let's have one up here, so they [vendors] got together and this is what came out of it," Ettinger said.

Ettinger said the market features an ever-changing lineup of vendors.

"There's a wide variety as you walk along," Ettinger said. "There are desserts, meats, usually there's a wine guy and olive oil from all over."

The market is held each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Bank Street. For more information on the Peekskill Farmer's Market or to become a vendor, contact Marilyn Ettinger at (914) 737-2780 or at peekskillbid@earthlink.net.
