The Akiva Scholarship is given to one outstanding incoming ninth-grader who has never before attended Jewish day school and covers four years of tuition.

Adam Shinder, an eighth-grader from New City is this year’s recipient. Adam and his family are members of the New City Jewish Center (NCJC). While Adam has always been a regular attendee at NCJC for holidays, Shabbat services, and special events, his interest in learning more about his religion and culture really sparked after his bar mitzvah.

He continued to study Judaism with his tutor, Leslie Goldress, and for the past few years, has developed a passion for learning more.

Adam has always attended public school in the Clarkstown Central School District, achieving High Honor Roll throughout his middle school years. He has been a member of the Robotics Team, worked on the school newspaper, and served as secretary of the Student Council for the 2016 class. He is proud to have worked in various volunteer capacities including for a soup kitchen in Suffern, where he has given his time for many years, as well as in the local Buddy Ball program, and at the Jewish Federation of Rockland’s annual phone-a-thon.

Adam said he is grateful to have received this Akiva Merit Scholarship from Schechter Westchester. He is happy to know that beyond the outstanding academics for which Schechter Westchester is known, they also provide their students with volunteer opportunities, so he will be able to continue on his path of helping others. He said he is looking forward to working in the Maker Space through the Engineering and Entrepreneurship class where he will have a hands-on learning experience.
