It happened around 2:20 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 in Hempstead.
According to detectives, Edgar Hernandez, of Hempstead, got into a verbal argument with a 57-year-old man in front of 391 Fulton Avenue. Hernandez then took a metal Boost Mobile advertisement sign and struck the victim in the head, according to police.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with head trauma. He is listed in serious condition. Upon police arrival, Hernandez was placed under arrest without incident.
Hernandez was charged with first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Saturday, Jan. 25 at First District Court in Hempstead.
