'Son of Hamas' Author Slated to Talk in Mt Kisco

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y.—The Chabad of Bedford, the Jewish center on Railroad Avenue in Bedford Hills, is sponsoring an event that will bring Mosab Hassan Yousef, author of “Son of Hamas,” to the Mount Kisco Holiday Inn to speak in a special lecture on February 2.

Yousef’s arrival will be a welcomed one for Rabbi Arik Wolf of the local Chabad, an extension of the Lubavitch Hasidic Jewish group headquartered in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. After reading the book, Wolf knew it was important to get the story into the local community.

“To make judgments, in the way many of us do about world events, we don’t have all that much knowledge of the complexities of these events living where we do, and not having the ability to talk to the players involved,” Wolf said. “This is a unique opportunity to hear what’s in the mind of the Hamas organization, and how the terrorist mind works and thinks.”

“Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue, and Unthinkable Choices” was published in 2010, bringing to light Yousef’s involvement in the Israeli and Palestinian conflict in which he acted as a spy for the Israelis. His father, the sheikh Yousef Dawood, was the founder of terrorist group Hamas, which Yousef turned against after discovering the amount of civilian brutality involved, among other issues. After getting captured by the Israeli security service in 1996, he agreed to become an informant on Hamas, a secret he held from 1997 to 2007.

News of the controversial lecture has already caught anxious ears, as the Chabad community is already measuring the excitement. “We’ve already gotten a very good response, and we’re expecting a fairly large crowd; at least a couple hundred people. I think there are a lot of people who would be very curious to hear what this man has to say,” Wolf explained. “He has an insight that very few other people you talk to would be able to give you.”

The lecture is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., with a cocktail hour starting at 6:30 p.m. During the cocktail hour, those who choose to sponsor the event can come and meet Yousef.
