KATONAH, N. Y. - If you want to be a better knitter practice is the best way to go about it and fortunately, aspiring knitters around these parts can reach out for help.
Every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Katonah Yarn holds a sit and knit session where people can come in and share tips, ideas or simply chat. Katonah Yarn is located inside the A&P shopping center on Bedford Road in Katonah.
Jennifer Ceisler, owner of Katonah Yarn, said the sit and knit has been going on for nearly six years.
We get approximately, 10 people here each night, Ceisler said. A lot of the same people come back.
Ceisler said her shop offered a number of workshops that are geared for people of various skill levels. But she said the Tuesday night meet ups are geared for people who already understand the basics.
Sometimes the Fine Winer, which is located in the same Shopping Plaza as Katonah Yarn, will supply wine for the meet-ups, Ceisler said.
Laura Marks, owner of Fine Lines of Katonah, describes herself as a mid-level knitter. She said her main motivation for coming each week is to learn from some of the more experienced knitters.
I had knitted in college, but I had stopped for 28 years, Marks said. I decided to take it up again when I had more time. This is a great store and the owner is terrific. Shes very helpful and shes always willing to give advice.
In addition to the sit and knit night, the store also hosts a number of other community events, including a hat drive in which volunteers knit hundreds of hats for the annual Christmas dinner at St. Marys Church in Katonah.
