Rain Holds Off For First Day of Art Show

ARMONK, N.Y. - To the delight of artists and patrons, the forecasted rain held off for most of the opening day of the 50th Annual Armonk Outdoor Art Show Saturday. Artists from around the country struggled to set up their exhibits and keep them dry during Friday’s downpour but Dave Taylor, who displayed his steel sculptures, didn’t have to worry about weather as much as others.

“It was very tough for everyone setting up in the rain,” Taylor said. “I see the artists with watercolors and things like that and, you know, if their stuff gets wet it’s gone.”

Taylor, a retired dentist, has been creating metal sculptures for about 30 years and since retiring, he’s turned it into a second career. Originally from Plattsburgh, New York, Taylor now resides in North Carolina, but he makes the trip every year to Armonk for the art show.

“I’ve been doing the show for 25 years since back when it was over at the ball field behind Town Hall,” Taylor said. “This is one of the better art shows in the country really and probably in the top 10, or at least the top 20, shows in the country.”

Taylor buys sheets of steel new and leaves them to rust before turning them into his works of art. His most popular piece among the art show crowd was the dog in the car door window, seen in the above photo.

“From the artist's point of view a lot of it is about money and sales are very good here,” said Taylor when comparing the Armonk Art Show to others like it. “The staff and the people who run the show are very nice.”

The show will resume, rain or shine, Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
