Paralympian Waddell to Visit Burke Rehabilitation

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – World-renowned Paralympian Chris Waddell will set the stage for next week’s Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Wheelchair Games when he presents a message of resilience and community during a Clinical Conference at the White Plains facility Monday.

Waddell, who was featured in July on ABC’s 20/20’s “Superhumans” segment for his 2009 summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, visits the area as a part of his 10-week tour of “Nametags and One Revolution,” the award-winning documentary of the climb, which will be shown on Sept. 19 at Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw.

“Nametags is not about disability, it is about resilience and community,” said Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Donna Volpitta. “Chris has a wonderful ability to bring people together and inspire them to do great things.”

Paralyzed in 1988 while ski racing for Middlebury College, Waddell has become one of the most decorated Paralympic athletes, earning 13 medals over seven games and has won World Championships in skiing and wheelchair racing. Waddell founded ‘One Revolution Foundation,” whose mission is to change the way the world sees people with disabilities by demonstrating the common journey of challenge. One Revolution stands for how something small can lead to something big—how one turn of the cranks can lead to the summit of 19,340-foot Mt Kilimanjaro, or how reaching one child can change the nature of our perceptions.

Waddell estimated that it took 528,000 such revolutions to reach the top of Kilimanjaro and endeavors to show students that they have the power each day to make decisions about what “Nametags” they will wear.

Members of the community are invited to attend this free presentation. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. For more information or to register for the event, contact Sandra Alexandrou at 914 597-2581 or via email at salexand@burke.org.
