Valhalla School District Keeps Eyes on the Heat

Administrators in  the Valhalla School District are keeping a close watch on the rising temperatures and taking measures to make sure all students remain safe.

"The temperature is allowed to get uncomfortable," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brenda Myers. "Our job is to monitor that it doesn't ever become unhealthy."

Wednesday's reported high was 95 degrees and Thursday is expected to bring a high of 100 degrees with thunderstorms. Things should begin to cool off Friday with a high of 82 degrees forecasted. The weekend should be even cooler with temperatures in the 70s predicted.

Myers said one of the first precautions the schools take is to have the athletic department follow the state’s athletic guidelines to make sure temperatures on the fields are manageable. If not, certain practices may be moved indoors.

"Everything on the calendar is looked at and we ask how it affects children," Myers said.

The district postponed a field day that had been scheduled for Wednesday in the hopes that it could be held when temperatures drop.

Myers said that while classrooms are not equipped with air conditioning units, the school open windows and activate fans early in the day to "maximize" the cooler morning air.

Schools do use air conditioners in computer labs and certain libraries where computer equipment is involved, Myers said. The administrative offices, she said, also have air conditioning because they are open year-round.

Additionally, Myers said the lights were dimmed in classrooms.

"We are promoting that students keep hydrating, hydrating, hydrating," she said. “We also have our nurses ready if students need ice to cool down."

Today at Viriginia Road Elementary School playground activity was limited.

"We didn’t want kids running around outside getting heated up," Myers said.
