"Making a difference starts now," Assistant Principal Kim Lapple told the students gathered at the assembly. "By doing small things, there can be a ripple effect and great changes may result."

The students in the Byram Hills school heard similar messages from one of their own.

Malorie Lipstein, a sophomore at Byram Hills High School, told the young students that making a difference is possible.

“I’m here today to share my story of how I have helped the school and community to make a difference and how each and every one of you can do the same,” she said, continuing on to describe her various volunteer activities.

Lipstein told the students to, among other things, join clubs, perform conscious acts of kindness and to show their appreciation for teachers and classmates.

“Get excited and stand behind something you believe in,” she said.

Middle school student Leah Sokol said the assembly inspired her.

"It doesn't have to be big. It can be something small like holding a door open for someone or saying thank you," she said.

As part of Make a Difference Day, students and their families donated new and used coats, shoes, raincoats, school supplies and small games to SOS Children's Village, an international charity.

Make a Difference Day is held annually on the fourth Saturday of October. The event often stretches out over several days.
