Byram Hills HS Band a Memorial Day Tradition

Band Director Marna Weiss spends every day with her Byram Hills High School band and Monday led her students in a collaborative performance at this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony in North Castle. The band filled the American Legion Post 1097 building and performed American classics in honor of the area’s fallen war heroes.“We’re a family,” Weiss said. “I love doing this for our community.”Weiss has been directing the Byram Hills band for 11 years and has participated in the Memorial Day festivities just as long. She said it has become a tradition that will never get old.“This is our way of giving back,” she said.Michael Cziner is a junior at Byram Hills and played trumpet at this year’s ceremony.“It’s an interesting and unique experience,” he said. “I play because it’s important to me, my family, and to the town.”Cziner performed in last year’s ceremony as well and was one of the two trumpet players to perform “Taps,” a musical piece associated with the United States military.“I don’t get nervous like I normally would when I play something like this,” he said. “There is a greater sense of pride than there is a feeling of pressure.”Weiss said the students felt fortunate to be performing at such a ceremony.“These kids understand the concept of servicing a community,” she said. “And this is what they do to serve.”Weiss is the head of three different groups at the high school, including concert band, symphonic, and wind symphony. All three combined to perform at the Memorial Day ceremony.
