United Way Runs In Purchase for Good Cause

HARRISON, N.Y. - Purchase was swarming with runners Saturday when United Way of Westchester and Putnam hosted its third annual Run United, a 5K run for health on the school's cross country running path. Over 160 participants of all ages gathered to support local health initiatives.

Naomi Adler, president and CEO of UWWP, welcomed guests in the opening ceremonies as runners prepared to dash onto the path, decorated with colorful balloon arches donated by Balloons by Arthur.

"Through United Way events like these, we can foster a happier, healthier community in Putnam and Westchester counties," Adler said. "It's wonderful to see all these families and runners exercising together to support the United Way's health initiatives."

The Toddler Dash was the first of three events and gave young runners a chance to participate in the festivities. All received blue ribbons for "sheer determination," UWWP said in a statement.

Following the Dash was the highly anticipated 5K, with runners darting across the college's Great Lawn and through Purchase College's cross country running path to the cheers of onlookers.

Maxwell Anderson of Croton-on-Hudson received first place overall for men, and Arlette Maher received "Overall Best Run for women." AkzoNobel, a Putnam-based company and official sponsor, placed second for team standings, while "Team Number One," comprised of Eastchester High School students, took home the top prize.

A less competitive one-mile run/walk gave participants of all ages a chance to exercise for the UWWP cause. Proceeds from the run went to support United Way's health initiatives that reduce childhood obesity, get healthy foods to low income families, and steer teens away from risky behaviors like drugs and alcohol use.

Massage therapy students from Finger Lakes School of Massage, physical therapists and athletic trainers from AON Physical Therapy & Wellness PLLC, and Dr. Susan Seven-Sky, chiropractor, were all on hand to spoil participants with services.

Sunny the Clown kept children entertained with animal balloons, while music and sound were provided by the local 100.7 WHUD. Official sponsors included Target, AzkoNobel, and O'Connor Davies Munns and Dobbins, LLP.

Other participating companies included Mike Berardino - State Farm, Stop & Shop, Highridge BAGELS 2, HYDRIVE Energy LLC, PepsiCo, Trader Joe's and Bagel Emporium of Port Chester.
