TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The new Tappan Zee Bridge's speedy progress through the approval process means a final decision on the proposed bridge could be reached as early as August, experts said.
Project Director Michael Anderson outlined the next steps in the proposed bridge project during a public hearing on the draft environmental impact statement Tuesday. Another public hearing on the draft statement will take place Thursday at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown from 4 to 9 p.m.
Anderson said state transportation officials were hoping to announce bids for pile testing by the end of the week. The testing would involve driving down different types of bridge piling so that contractors can see what sort of bridge foundation would be needed. Bridge crews are also testing the soil around the proposed bridge site.
Anderson said a final environmental impact statement is expected in July. Included in that statement will be the state's response to the scoping briefing comments and comments on the draft environmental impact, Anderson said.
A Record of Decision on the project by the Federal Highway Administration is expected late this summer, Anderson said.
