Nonna's Run in Office Comes to an End

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – After the results of the recent election, John Nonna’s term as District 3 County Legislator will soon be coming to an end.  Looking back, Nonna said he hopes that he improved the area he served.

“I think I served the people of Westchester well,” Nonna said.  “I hope that I left it a better place based on what I’ve accomplished in my time on the board,”

During his time as legislator, Nonna said his greatest accomplishments have been maintaining a transparent government for residents and creating key safety net programs for those in need.  Those include Job Star, a program affiliated with Westchester Community College that allows those on welfare to maintain jobs, and Eviction Protection, which provides rental assistance to those that are in danger of becoming homeless.  In October, Nonna said one of his goals going forward if reelected was to maintain low taxes for residents.

Nonna was not given that chance as Republican challenger Michael Smith, declared victory last week as he held a 123 vote lead over Nonna with all districts reporting and absentee ballots counted.  Nonna said he still resents some campaign strategies Smith employed.

“I think this race was run by lies and there’s proof of that in the Fair Campaign findings,” Nonna said.

Shortly before Election Day, the Westchester County Fair Campaign Practice Committee found that seven of Smith’s campaign advertisements against Nonna were false and misleading.  Nonna said he found it difficult to publicize those findings as they came about just a few days before Election Day.

At this point, Nonna said it is too early to tell if he will run for office again.  He currently practices law at Dewey & LeBouef in New York.

This election would have been Nonna’s third consecutive term as county legislator.  Previously, he served as the mayor and a trustee member for the village of Pleasantville.  He is a 30 year resident of Pleasantville and is married with four children.  He has a bachelor's degree from Princeton and a law degree from New York University.

District 3 is comprised of Mount Pleasant, Pleasantville, and Sleepy Hollow, and parts of Greenburgh, and North Castle and Briarcliff Manor.
