Late-Starting El Nino Could Be Worst Ever

Over the next few weeks, weather forecasters expect the current strong El Niño brewing in the Pacific Ocean to continue to grow and create weather chaos, according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA.

El Nino is expected to continue growing bringing cool wet conditions to the South and warmer and drier conditions to the northern United States.

El Niños are created when steady, westward-blowing trade winds in the Pacific weaken, or reverse direction, causing an intense warming of the upper ocean in the central and eastern Pacific, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.

In the United States, many of El Niño's biggest impacts are expected to take place early this year. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict an El Niño-induced shift in weather patterns to begin soon, bringing several months of relatively cool and wet weather across the southern United States, and warmer and dry conditions in the northern United States, added officials with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
