El Niños are created when steady, westward-blowing trade winds in the Pacific weaken, or reverse direction, causing an intense warming of the upper ocean in the central and eastern Pacific, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.
In the United States, many of El Niño's biggest impacts are expected to take place early this year. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict an El Niño-induced shift in weather patterns to begin soon, bringing several months of relatively cool and wet weather across the southern United States, and warmer and dry conditions in the northern United States, added officials with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
