When former Westchester County Executive Andy Spano was in office, it often frustrated him that some pertinent issues were not discussed even though they affected his constituents. In his new TV show, "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," he will have the chance to discuss what he wants.
"I'm having a ball," said Spano. "I decided to do a show that would get into these issues but wouldn't bore the hell out of the viewers. You've got to make the conversations interesting and entertaining."
His pilot episode, airing Friday night at 6 p.m. on RNN, is entitled "Education Today: The Problem with Schools." It will tackle and oppose President Barack Obama's reform suggestion, stating that it is diminishing the ability to compete in the 21st Century.
"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" studies three time periods for each subject: past, present and future. In each episode, Spano aims to evaluate the errors and successes in years prior, analyze the current situation, and offer advice on how to confront the future.
Spano said he felt education was appropriate for his inaugural episode.
"Education is one of the most important issues of our time and it is not working for our kids. It is not effective. The country is focusing on reforming the way children were taught years ago, but that's wrong, he said. We are still focusing on reading, writing and arithmetic the way we were in the 1950s. That is not relevant to the 21st century. We need to focus on creativity, community and collaboration."
Future topics of discussion will include climate change, seniors in the current society, energy, the crybaby generation and the value of a college education.
"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" can also be seen online. The show's idea was born from Spano's radio show of the same name. Archived footage of the radio show can be found here.
