In response, a "large-scale police presence" was made on Friday afternoon, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities responded when a caller, at around 3 p.m. on Friday, contacted an ambulance service to report that an armed assailant attacked the group home, which is for disabled people.
Sheriff's deputies responded, with the Putnam County Emergency Response Team (ERT), which is a specially armed group, on the scene.
Members of the ERT entered the group home and discovered that the report was false, the sheriff's office adds.
The sheriff's office is seeking to identify the caller and urges anyone with details to report to call 845-225-4300.
During the emergency response to the call, the sheriff's office notes, Simpson Road was closed for almost three hours, which resulted in traffic delays and back ups. The situation happened around the start of the Friday evening rush hour.
