Bullfighter Fatally Gored On Live TV, First Spanish Matador Death Since '85

A professional Spanish matador was killed in the ring for the first time in more than three decades as a stunned crowd and live television audience watched in horror Saturday, according to multiple reports.

After first being gored in the thigh by the half-ton bull's left horn, 29-year-Victor Barrio was gored in the chest. He later died of a punctured lung and severed aorta, according to CBS News.

"My condolences to the family and colleagues of Victor Barrio, the deceased bullfighter this evening in Teruel," Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted. "Rest in Peace."

Jose Cubero was the last bullfighter to die in the ring in Spain in 1985.

About 2,000 bullfights are held each year in Spain, according to bbc.com.
