Armonk Nutritionist Offers Muffin Tops for Dieters

ARMONK, N.Y. - Armonk nutritionist Lyssa Weiss created a product that has become the central element of her Skinny Jeans Diet program -- muffin tops.

The Skinny muffin toppers, sold at Tazza and Country Kitchen in Armonk and other Westchester and Connecticut locations, are based on a recipe Weiss created in conjunction with a Brooklyn baker who prepares them. They are available in corn, chocolate chip and double chocolate chip flavors.

Muffin tops may not seem like an item for dieters, but they solve a particular problem dieters face. "The number one reason people get off a diet is deprivation, and when you feel deprived you end up overeating," Weiss said. "The number one way to combat deprivation is to have foods people enjoy. The muffin tops are a way to enjoy a muffin or cake like product that is calorie controlled with protein and fibers. It's portion controlled and you can buy it in a single serving. It works no matter what  diet on you're on, Skinny Jeans or Weight Watchers."

Weiss started selling muffin tops in 2009 when she started the Skinny Jeans Diet, which she said is a program that provides a smart strategy that helps women "get a hold of their emotions, stop obsessing and start living. Be able to rule food so it doesn't rule you."

Amy Gordon, an Armonk resident who was eating a muffin top at Tazza, said, "I'm trying to watch my weight and be healthy and this is a great addition to my everyday diet. It's a great way to satiate my craving without feeling deprived."

Weiss has started a Facebook page for the Skinny Jeans Diet and is preparing a book on the diet that will be published by Harper & Row in 2013.

Weiss is married with two children who attend Armonk public elementary schools and has lived in Armonk for 11 years.
