Longtime Bayonne Councilman Joseph Makowski, 77

Joseph L. Makowski, a longtime public servant for the City of Bayonne died on Saturday, May 13 at the age of 77, according to his obituary.

Makowski spent 16 years on the City Council and also worked for the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services for over 27 years. He was council president from 1994 to 1998 and served on numerous committees and clubs. 

His father, Joseph E. Makowski was also a longtime public servant and in 2022, the city dedicated Makowski Park, honoring both men.

"Joe was committed passionately to representing the people of Bayonne. He was a strong, independent voice on the City Council for sixteen years," said Mayor Jimmy Davis. "He was a great friend and confidante who gave honest advice to me and other elected officials."

Makowski is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen, his two children, Lisa and Keith and his two grandchildren, Joey and Jack, along with numerous friends and relatives, his obituary reads. He frequently patronized Ricon de Espana, where he loved the clams casino, his obituary reads.

" 'He was a quiet, unassuming man. You could never figure out where he stood on any issue," ' said nobody," according to his obituary. 

A funeral was held on Wednesday, May 17 at St. John Paul II Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He was entombed at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum in North Arlington.
