New Jersey residents are digging out of this week's snow storm — the worst of the season so far. According to the National Weather Service, the storm left 15 inches in the northern-most part of the state, canceling schools across the region. A 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran returning from a birthday party with his wife and son was struck and killed by a car while changing a tire on the NJ Turnpike in Secaucus, authorities said. Police found East Newark's Jose Peralta lying in the roadway around 11:50 Saturday night, New Jersey State Police said. The driver did not stop after hitting Peralta on the right shoulder of the southbound eastern spur, state police said. A 38-year-old North Bergen recycling plant trolly cart operator was charged in the death of his 61-year-old coworker, authorities said. Santiago Ventura Blanco was operating a bulldozer and pushing a concrete dumpster at Lincoln Recycling on Dell Avenue when Horacio Juarez Diaz was pinned between the dumpster and a wall Thursday afternoon, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Tops Diner In E. Newark To Close For Expansion: Report
Tops Diner, an East Newark staple for generations, is slated to close for up to six weeks for an expansion that will triple the size of the eatery, News 12 New Jersey reported. Plans were filed with Hudson County a few months ago but a spokeswoman for the Passaic Avenue restaurant declined to say when construction would actually begin when reached by Daily Voice at the time. Sacco, Other Hudson Lawmakers Support Licenses For Undocumented Immigrants
State Sen. Nicholas Sacco (D-32) Thursday joined Assembly members Angelica Jiminez and Pedro Mejia in favoring proposed legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers licenses. Speaking in North Bergen, Sacco said the legislation would "make our streets safer" by enabling drivers who are not in the U.S. legally to get insurance and to pass a driving test.
