Bergen County Hospitals Rank Among Safest In New Jersey
New Jersey hospitals are among the safest in the nation, according to the fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grade report from The Leapfrog Group.
The Garden State ranks in the top 10 states for the highest percentage of "A" hospitals, joining states like Utah, Virginia, and Connecticut. The grades, which are updated twice a year, assess nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country on their effectiveness at preventing medical errors, accidents, and infections.

NJ Loan Officer Was Fighting For Access To Promising Drug Before He Died, 43
Michael Smith, a Frelinghuysen resident, died on Sunday, April 28, with his wife by his side after battling stomach cancer, according to his obituary and various social media posts. He was 43.
Born in Dover, Smith spent two decades working with Huntington National Bank, according to his obituary on the Cochran Funeral Home website. His LinkedIn page shows he was a mortgage loan officer.

Winners: Mega Millions Lottery Players Take Home $10K
There were two third-tier prizewinning tickets sold for the Friday, Dec. 23, Mega Millions lottery drawing.
They matched four of the five white balls and the Gold Mega Ball drawn winning the $10,000 prize.

Two NJ Powerball Players Win $150K, Nine Win $50K
Eleven New Jersey Lottery tickets matched four of the five white balls and the Power Ball drawn on Monday, Oct. 31, winning the $50,000 second-tier prize.
Two of those tickets were purchased with Power Play, multiplying the prizes to $150,000.
The Powerball jackpot now rolls to $1.2 billion for the next drawing to be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 10:59 pm.

2 Busted For Selling Drugs Following Morris County Traffic Stop: Police
A driver and passenger were arrested for selling drugs following a traffic stop in Morris County, authorities said.
Jeanne Hicks, 51, of Denville, was pulled over on Lackawanna Avenue in Denville for motor vehicle violations on Monday, Sept. 19, Police Capt. Jeffrey Tucker said.
A follow-up investigation found that Hicks, as well as the vehicle’s passenger, Ronald Washington, 62, of Dover, were in possession of drugs and paraphernalia, Tucker said in a release.
Washington was also found with a large amount of cash, police said.

UPDATE: Authorities identified a driver killed in a horrific Labor Day crash on Route 208 as a 78-year-old woman from Dover and the injured passenger as her 80-year-old husband.
Carmen Traverso was pronounced dead at the scene, Hawthorne Police Capt. Robert King said Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Pablo Traverso, meanwhile, was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, the captain said.

Three accused dealers were arrested and charged after a Sussex County traffic stop led to the discovery of heroin and crack cocaine, authorities said.
Officers stopped a car that was speeding in the left lane of Route 26 in Byram and met with the driver, William Connolly, of Morristown, on Saturday, August 6, police said.
While speaking with Connolly, officers learned that he had a glass crack cocaine pipe in his pocket, as well as other drug paraphernalia, police said.

PA Man Burglarized 6 Morris County Businesses In 3 Months, Prosecutor Says
A Pennsylvania man is behind bars on allegations that he burglarized half a dozen Morris County businesses — including a retail and convenience store, restaurant, and three gas stations — over the course of three months, authorities announced.
Kenneth K. Cook, 48, was charged with various counts of theft, burglary, criminal mischief, and conspiracy, Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll said in a release with local officials on Tuesday, June 7.
