Nick Speranza Of Hawthorne Dies, 41 Nicholas Speranza of Hawthorne died on Monday, Sept. 14. He was 41 years old. A water at Puzzo's restaurant in Hawthorne, Nick was a Ridgewood native and enjoyed riding his bike and walking through Goffle Brook Park, his obituary says. He was remembered as an animal lover and artist. Visitation will be Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home. The funeral service and cremation will be private. Landscaper, 88, Riding Mower Falls Into Passaic County Brook An 88-year-old landscaper escaped serious injury Monday when he fell into Goffle Brook in Hawthorne, authorities confirmed. The North Haledon resident was riding the mower when it plunged into the water in county-owned Goffle Brook Park, responders said. He was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center with injuries that didn't appear life-threatening, said Bill Maer, a spokesman for Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Photos: Garbage Truck Slams Into Tree, Hawthorne Officer Rescues Driver HAWTHORNE, N.J. -- A driver rescued by a Hawthorne police officer sustained serious injuries after his garbage truck lost its brakes and slammed into a tree in Goffle Brook Park on Tuesday. The truck was descending a steep hill on nearby MacFarlan Avenue before it suddenly careened into the park. An ambulance took the driver to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson.   A paramedic team from St. Joseph's assisted Hawthorne EMTs.
