Brian Kozub, 39, of Chatham Township, was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and various weapons offenses after stabbing the man in the neck with a pocket knife at a residence on Buxton Road around 10:50 p.m. while celebrating July 4th, Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Tragedy: Bergen Teen Drowns In Backyard Pool A 17-year-old Bergen County boy drowned in a backyard pool as the 2023 Fourth of July holiday period was about to begin, authorities confirmed. The boy's father conducted CPR after finding the lifeless teen behind their Hillsdale home shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 28. A rig from the Township of Washington Volunteer Ambulance Corps was requested and the boy was transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, responders said. The day-long Fourth of July event is making its big return this summer after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, according to its website. With a steady decline in New Jersey's coronavirus cases, "it is the perfect time to bring Oceanfest back,” Co-chair Esther Cohen told NJ Advance Media. Westfield had gone two weeks without cases up until June 30. Since then, 17 new cases were reported. Most of Westfield's new cases are between ages 18 and 24 years old, and attended Fourth of July and graduation parties, Mayor Shelley Brindle said.
