‘Out of the ashes we will rise again’ is USS New York’s message

Living along the edge of the Hudson River, I have been privy to many comings and goings over the years. But nothing was more touching and spectacular than the arrival of the USS New York this morning.

I often feel as though I live along an international highway! There are water taxis and commuter boats, NYPD and Coast Guard vessels, summer afternoon sails, luxury yachts and tug boats — and, of course, the cruise ships. Dubbed the “grandest ocean liner at sea,” the Queen Mary 2 back in 2004 almost seemed to be right in the center of my living room — and I’m on the 23rd floor. The departure of the USS Intrepid for repairs was equally spectacular, but in a different sort of way.

Eight years ago, I lived on the other side of this building, facing the World Trade Center.  On Sept. 11th, my perspective was drastically different than the one I had this morning.

And though I’ve relived that story too often to count, I will gladly recount the story of the USS New York’s arrival this morning until the day I die.

This ship is a metaphor for our strength, endurance and spirit, and it says, “out of ashes, we will rise again!”

Never Forget!
