Now Passaic County is doing something to help.
The county’s Division of Weatherization was recently awarded a $423,853 grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs to be used to perform weatherization and improvements on homes.
“The Freeholders and our staff work diligently to acquire these grants,” said Freeholder Director TJ Best. “Our weatherization division can use these funds and create opportunities to assist people, without needing to put a burden on our county taxpayers.”
The funds will be administered through the Heating Improvement Program (HIP), a program that allows seniors and low-income families to permanently reduce energy bills by making homes more energy efficient.
“Efficient heating and cooling is about more than comfort, it’s about public health as well,” said Freeholder Sandi Lazzara, who chairs the Human Services Committee. “Poor air conditioning can trigger an asthma attack, and poor heating makes it harder for diabetics to control their blood sugar. The people that we help are also the most likely to have little or no health insurance, so we are making these projects count.”
