Flags To Be Lowered For Paterson Soldier Killed In Training Accident

PATERSON, N.J. — Flags across the state will be flown at half-staff today in honor of United States Army Specialist Kevin Joniel Rodriguez, of Paterson, who was killed in a training accident two weeks ago.

Rodriguez enlisted in the Army on Oct. 8, 2013 and served honorably as an infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division, Company A, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

He was the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Expert Marksmanship Badge.

Gov. Chris Christie issued the order "in recognition and mourning of a brave and loyal American hero."

According to the order, the flag of the United States of America and the flag of New Jersey shall be flown at half-staff at all State departments, offices, agencies, and instrumentalities during appropriate hours on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
