Clifton Boys & Girls Club Selects 2016 Youth Of The Year

CLIFTON, N.J. -- The Boys & Girls Club of Clifton has announced its choice for 2016 Youth of the Year.

Alexis Soriano has been an active member for 14 years, the club said.

The teen was selected for her long record of community service, which includes volunteering at a local animal shelter and running food drives, the club said.

The club's Youth of the Year program is sponsored by the Reader's Digest Foundation and is designed to promote and recognize service to the club and community, academic performance and contributions to family and spiritual life.

Once selected, each club's Youth of the Year receives a certificate and medallion then enters a statewide competition. If they then make it through the regional and national levels, they could win up to $26,000 in scholarships.

State winners receive a plaque and $1,000, the club said.

Soriano is a senior at Passaic County Technical Institute, according to a report by northjersey.com.

According to northjersey.com, she has worked as a counselor at the club and with children during an after-school program there.

She is studying theater arts at the institute and hopes to attend Kean University in Union, N.J., this fall to study psychology, the northjersey.com story said.

The club's main building is at 181 Colfax Ave. Its administrative offices are at 822 Clifton Ave.
