Wyckoff PD: Off-Duty Officer From Another Town Helps Catch 'Booster Bag' Shoplifter

An off-duty police officer from another town helped Wyckoff's finest catch a shoplifter who was using a “booster bag” to try and avoid detection.

When two men split up after stuffing the merchandise into the bag at a local store, the officer followed one of them while alerting Wyckoff police, Lt. Joseph Soto said.

The officer pointed out the suspect when borough police arrived moments later, Soto said.

Jose A. Guzman, 28, of Union City tried to hide but was quickly caught, he said.

Police recovered $1,125 worth of items, along with the special bag, which is used to defeat retail theft detectors, Soto said.

Guzman was processed on a shoplifting charge and released pending a court appearance.

The second suspect was gone.
