In Rutherford, a "quick but powerful" storm took down five trees including 14 significant limbs and 13 power lines, Police Chief John Russo said.
One family was displaced due to a tree impacting their home and most of the 3,500 residents that PSE&G said lost power were on the west side of town, according to Russo. Six PSE&G crews were on scene as of press time
"PSEG mobilized very quickly as usual and quickly had half of those without power back up and running," the chief said.
"RPD does not foresee this being a long term incident, however, if it were to go that way, the Borough has procedures in place to provide assistance to those effected."
Approximately 500 residents had lost power in Hampton (Sussex County), according to the JCP&L outage map.
Nearly 4,000 residents were in the dark in Monmouth County, mostly in Atlantic Highlands, JCP&L says. Most were concentrated in Navesink/Locust and Port Monmouth.
Approximately 1,800 were without power in Fair View, and others in Little Silver, approximately 525 in Rumson.
In Cranford, 460 residents had lost power as of 6 p.m., according to PSEG.
Temperatures had risen to the low 90s with heat index values of 101, according to the National Weather Service.
