Three Firefighters Injured, 50 Displaced In Passaic Blaze, Authorities Say
A fire in Passaic on Sunday, June 23 injured three fighters and initially displaced more than 50 people, authorities said.
At 9 p.m. firefighters responded to a home on High Street, according to a release from the City of Passaic. The fire quickly spread to four homes, forcing firefighters to rescue four people who were stranded on the roofs of two different properties, authorities said.
No residents were injured, though a dog died from smoke inhalation, authorities said. Three firefighters were hospitalized, two from heat exhaustion and one with a shoulder injury, authorities said.

Surfing Teacher Rescues Jersey Shore Swimmer While Filming Promo Video For Boogie Board
A teacher saved a Jersey Shore swimmer in distress while surfing over the weekend, and he just so happened to capture it on video.
US Marine Steve Houser, of Toms River, went to LBI Sunday, Sept. 3, to film a promo video for one of Tandm Surf's boards

Houser — who works as a special education history teacher in the PATHS program at Piscataway High School — was surfing out teaching his daughter how to surf when he spotted the struggling swimmers.

Drowned Firefighter Mark Batista 'Always Put Family First'
Mark Batista's family was his whole world.
Batista, a firefighter for the FDNY, died while trying to save his daughter from drowning on Friday, June 9. Batista, 39, went into the waters off the Sylvania Avenue beach around 8:30 a.m. in an effort to save her, when she got caught in the rough surf.
The girl was saved by rescuers but Batista's body wasn't found until nearly 10 a.m., and he was pronounced dead at the hospital, despite life-saving efforts, police said.

Teen Boy Drowns, 5 Others Rescued From Non-Guarded NJ Beach
A 15-year-old died and five others rescued from a non-lifeguarded beach at the Jersey Shore Sunday, May 28, officials said.
Responders arrived at Sandy Hook's Beach B, located in the Gateway National Park Area, around 4:30 p.m., park spokeswoman Daphne Yun tells Daily Voice.
Of the six pulled from the waters, one refused medical attention, one was sent to Jersey Shore Medical Center, and three were rushed to Monmouth Medical Center.
The teen boy, whose identity was not released as of Monday morning, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

NJ Bridge Jumper, 29, Rescued From River With 2 Broken Legs
A 29-year-old Pennsylvania man was rescued nearly 200 yards down the Delaware River from where he jumped off of a New Jersey bridge, and hospitalized with both legs broken over the weekend, authorities said.
The Furlong, PA man had parked his vehicle on a Stockton, NJ bridge around 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, then jumped into the water, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Alejandro Goez said.
The Bridge Commission reported the vehicle stopped on the bridge, bringing authorities to the scene.
