Officers responding to a fight at the Ivy Inn just before 7:30 p.m. Friday found Timothy S. Pond "intoxicated and causing a disturbance," Detective Lt. Michael Colaneri said Saturday.
After being asked to leave the Terrace Avenue tavern, Pond "began yelling obscenities and threw a drinking glass at the bar, causing it to shatter," then tussled with tavern employees, Colaneri said.
Officers couldn't calm him down and opted to take him into custody for disorderly conduct, he said.
Pond fought with them before finally being handcuffed, Colaneri said.
They processed him at headquarters for being disorderly, resisting arrest, and obstructing a governmental function and called a family member to pick him up, he said.
After they let him go, Pond continued to shout curses at officers outside headquarters, the lieutenant said.
They went to grab him a second time when Pond ran, he said.
They quickly caught Pond, who elbowed an officer in the face, Colaneri said. Two other officers sustained minor injuries, he said.
Pond was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center after requesting medical treatment himself. He was then transferred to the Bergen County Jail on the original charges, plus more serious counts of assault on a police oficer and resisting arrest.
He remained held in the county lockup on Saturday.
