A suspicious package prompted evacuations and a large emergency response to a Bergen County neighborhood on Wednesday, Jan. 22, authorities said.
Police were called to the 300 block of Beech Street in Washington Township around 4:45 p.m., after a resident reported receiving an unexpected brown cardboard box from an overseas address, police said in a news release. The nature of the call led officers to close Beech Street and evacuate nearby homes.

A Bergen County man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of the 2021 murder of his girlfriend, who he stabbed and beat in her home, prosecutors said.
Patrick J. Camilli, 59, of Washington Township, was sentenced to life in prison on Dec. 6, following his conviction for the 2021 murder of 51-year-old Mary E. Huber, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

A 23-year-old Bergen County man was arrested after authorities found him with more than 31,100 child pornography items.
Benjamin P. Ritter, of Washington Township, became the center of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutorās Office Cyber Crimes Unit in mid-September, Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
The investigation, which involved a court-authorized search of Ritter's electronic device, revealed that he viewed, saved, downloaded, and/or possessed 31,110 items depicting nude and/or sexually explicit prepubescent and pubescent children, the prosecutor said.

'Dear Delusional': Westwood Man, 69, Harassed Local Citizens With Anonymous Letters, Police Say
A 69-year-old Westwood man waged a harassment campaign against citizens who expressed their opinions about various causes in local newspapers, sending anonymous letters to their homes, authorities charged.
Bruce Manning sent the "Dear Delusional" letters to citizens in town and in neighboring Washington Township, Westwood Police Chief Michael Pontillo said.
"These unsolicited anonymous letters were delivered directly to the recipient victims' homes, which was of great concern to [them]," the chief said.
