Emergency crews spent hours braving treacherous conditions to rescue a stranded swan that was found hurt and unable to fly on Lake Musconetcong Thursday, authorities said. The bird was found stranded at a dam along the lake "at least 15 or 20 feet out of reach," according to the Netcong Police Department and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison. Animal control officers worked for several hours to rescue the swan, which was "in a very difficult location under a bridge on the dam," St. Hubert's said. An abused and neglected dog found by police investigating a crime on Christmas Eve is fortunate to be alive. So his adoptive name makes perfect sense. Officers from Irvington found the dog they named Lucky so severely injured that a leg had to be amputated. Mysterious Monkey Sightings Reported By North Jersey Students
Students at one North Jersey school were kept inside on Friday due to alleged monkey sightings outside, NJ Advance Media reports. South Orange public works employees numerous students at the Montrose Early Childhood Center in South Orange all reported seeing the animal, the outlet said. School principal Bonita Samuels said students have been inside since 10:15 a.m., and will be until the monkey is located. More Than 100 Neglected Cats Rescued From NJ Hoarding Situation
More than 100 neglected cats were rescued from a hoarding situation at a home in South Bound Brook, rescue officials said. Animal control officers from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center were called in to assist local police after a neighbor complained about a foul odor coming from the home, St Hubert's said. Dozens of cats and kittens were subsequently found living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, officials said. The unidentified resident surrendered custody of the cats to St. Hubert’s. Eileen Patricia McLaughlin Notarangelo a longtime resident of Montvale, died on March 26 after a long illness. She was 81 years old. She was born in Whitestone, NY to the late Frank E. and Myrtle M. McLaughlin. She lived in Brooklyn, and as a teenager moved to Bergenfield and graduated from Bergenfield High School in 1957. She moved to Montvale in 1962 with her husband, a Bergenfield High alumnus (1951). Eileen worked at Valley Saving & Loan in Bergenfield before devoting all her time to caring for her family. Hunterdon Central High School junior and varsity lacrosse goalie Alexea Karpinski died Nov. 21. She was 17. Born and raised in Raritan Township, Karpinski was known for her love of sports, particularly lacrosse. She played as goalie for the Hunterdon Central Red Devils as well as for the Triple Threat Elite Club Team, her obituary says. Karpinski had a goal of playing D1 lacrosse while pursuing an exercise science degree. She wanted to become a professional athletic trainer, her memorial says. Nearly 50 roosters were being rounded up Wednesday after Paterson police out on a series of citywide pre-dawn drug raids discovered a major cockfighting ring at the end of a dead-end street. Police arrested eight people and seized $2,300 in illegal proceeds, three bags of pot, two THC vape pipes and five Oxycodone pills during a 1 a.m. raid at the Sixth Avenue location, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said.
