Update: Resident, 80, Hospitalized, Son Arrested In Destructive Rochelle Park Blaze
An 80-year-old woman was hospitalized and her ex-con son arrested as firefighters doused a smoky Tuesday morning blaze that ravaged their Rochelle Park home.
Carmine Covino, 55, was taken into custody after he interfered with responders trying to take his mother, Concetta, to Hackensack University Medical Center after she suffered smoke inhalation, Rochelle Park Police Lt. Edward Kukalski said.
Covino, a registered sex offender with a lengthy rap sheet, "ignored several warnings" before officers were left no choice, the lieutenant said.

A fast-moving fire that ravaged a Bergenfield home rekindled several hours later, bringing firefighters back.
No one was injured in the fierce afternoon fire, which ignited on the second floor of the single-family Carnation Place home behind the Knickerbocker Country Club on Tuesday, April 12.
Firefighters knocked down the blaze within a half-hour. It was placed under control around 4:40 p.m., roughly 45 minutes after it began.

Eight children and four adults were confirmed dead in a fire that swept through a Philadelphia rowhouse early Wednesday morning, city officials said.
Had the smoke alarms in the N. 23 Street building been working properly, though, things might have turned out differently, Mayor Jim Kenney's office said in a news release.

Firefighters Douse Mahwah Basement Blaze Near Rockland Border
Firefighters doused a basement blaze Wednesday that severely damaged a Mahwah home near the Upper Saddle River and Rockland borders.
No injuries were reported in the two-alarm blaze, which broke out shortly after 3:15 p.m. on Tam-O-Shanter Drive in the Scotch Hills section of the township barely a quarter-mile from Airmont, NY.
