Firefighters Quickly Douse Blaze In Hillsdale Home Under Renovation Authorities are probing the cause of a pre-dawn fire Monday in a house undergoing renovations in Hillsdale. The call to the split-level residence on Kinderkamack Road at Lawrence Street came in at 5:11 a.m. Aug. 14, Hillsdale Fire Chief Dan Schuster said. It "burned through" to the second floor, the chief said in a release. "The fire was knocked down in less than 15 minutes and placed under control at 5:41 a.m.," Schuster said. Leblon Steak is located on Kinderkamack Road in Hillsdale, formerly occupied by Golden Dynasty. The Chinese restaurant closed after 30 years in 2020.  Leblon was co-founded by Vartek Rybka and Wellington Brito. Brito owns Flames Brazilian Steakhouse in Belmar. A borough police officer saw a Ford Explorer with Florida license plates speeding south on Kinderkamack Road moments after hearing an alert that it had been involved in thefts from vehicles in Woodcliff Lake. The officer stopped the vehicle, but then the driver – identified as Khalil D. Pass, 26, of Fort Lauderdale – hit the gas and sped off, Detective Travis Woods said. The northbound BMW X6 struck a tree and overturned in the driveway of a Kinderkamack Road home near Washington Avenue just before 2 a.m., police said. Finding the undercarriage ablaze, responding Officers Alex Kaplan and Matt Buesser grabbed their extinguishers. Backups provided help until the fire was completely doused.
