Venezuelan Immigrant Builds Dream Life Photographing Dream Homes In Bergen County
Finding a better life in the U.S. was not a guarantee for Edwing Hernandez when he immigrated with his wife from Venezuela in 2012.
But it was a possibility.
He had $3,000 in his pocket, and a simple dream.
"For me at that moment, [my dream] was to be in a safe country with freedom of speech and be able to live and have my basic needs covered," said Hernandez, 34, of Union City.
For years, Hernandez worked physically-demanding jobs and long hours, sometimes 14 a day, commuting two hours to and from work, for only $8 an hour.

A Somalian man living in Pennsylvania threatened to assassinate President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, and now he's in a Pennsylvania Prison, according to a release by the US Department of Justice on March 15, 2024.
Mohamed Farah, 34, who was living in Cumberland County, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jennifer P. Wilson to three years’ imprisonment on Wednesday, March 13.
Following his release, the Court has also imposed a three-year term of probation.

Man Charged With Vicious $30,000 Baseball Bat Assault-Robbery In Little Ferry
Federal authorities have moved to take custody of a Bergen County Jail inmate charged with stealing $30,000 from a man he bashed in the head with a baseball bat outside a Little Ferry business.
Jose Mejia, a 32-year-old Salvadoran national, was wanted for a Dec. 28 robbery in a parking lot just off Route 46 and Liberty Street.
He was captured this past Thursday, Jan. 11, records show.

A married construction worker from Cliffside Park who's accused of sexually assaulting a preteen is being held for federal authorities, jail records show.
Delfino Simon-Roca, 56, was charged with sexual assault and child endangerment following a month-long investigation that began with a tip from the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Underage Teen Sexually Assaulted In Rochelle Park, Hackensack, Arrest Made, Prosecutor Says
An unemployed man living in Rochelle Park remained jailed following his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting an underage teen multiple times.
Luis Zumba Chablay, 42, raped and otherwise sexually assaulted the victim, who was no more than 16, both in Rochelle Park and Hackensack, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Rochelle Park police subsequently alerted detectives from the prosecutor's Special Victims Unit, who arrested Chablay on Saturday, Oct. 21.

ICE Looks To Deport Stolen Car Passenger, 22, After Montvale Pursuit, Elmwood Park Crash
A stolen vehicle pursuit that began in Montvale ended in a crash and the arrests of two occupants at a Garden State Parkway exit ramp in Elmwood Park.
Police began pursuing the Range Rover, which had been reported stolen out of Saddle River, on Chestnut Ridge Road around 5 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, Montvale Police Chief Doug McDowell said.
The vehicle crashed at Exit 157 onto Route 46 off the southbound Parkway 15 or so minutes later.
The driver, Raidis A. Santos Tejada, 19, of Newark was trapped in the car and taken at gunpoint, Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno said.
