Rooney, 24, of Westwood worked as a Hillsdale dispatcher the past three years. “In the beginning, I questioned, Why me?” Rooney said of his cancer. “But then I took my illness as a positive because it led me to where I am today.  “The second time around, I was working here as a dispatcher,” he added. “The guys rallied around me, helped me out. Montvale Gym Raises Money To Help Injured Marine HARRINGTON PARK, N.J. — When Kyle Chappell, the so-called “Miracle Marine,” needed help modifying his home to maneuver his wheelchair, Doug DiPaola of Harrington Park was happy to help. DiPaola, 57, founded Homes for Veterans, a nonprofit, precisely for people like Chappell. “I learned there are a lot of injured veterans who need help with things that do not meet the requirements of any VA program,” he said. Their needs include widening doorways, installing ramps, creating roll-in showers, and modifying kitchens. Chappell, who lives in Boonton, served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and …

9/11 Survivor Tells Allendale: ‘Live In The Present’ ALLENDALE, N.J. — Some 500 people turned out Sunday for Allendale’s 15th Annual Candlelight Ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in Crestwood Park. “We take the ceremony very seriously,” said Councilwoman Amy Wilczynski, organizer. This year’s gathering featured a spellbinding talk by Brian Clark of Mahwah, one of four survivors above the point of impact in the South Tower. Also, the traditional reading of historic timelines of 9/11 events was done by sophomores at Northern Highlands Regional High School. All those reading were born in 2001, Wilczynski pointed out. They did so while standing …
Dumont Mental Health Leader Took 9/11 Families To Site Dumont Mental Health Leader Took 9/11 Families To Site
Dumont Mental Health Leader Took 9/11 Families To Site DUMONT, N.J. — A month after the planes flew into the towers on 9/11, Vicki Sidrow, head of Vantage Health System in Dumont, was on a boat crossing the Hudson. She was escorting a couple from Ocala, Florida from the state family support center in Jersey City to the makeshift memorial for the victims in Lower Manhattan. That’s the system that state had set up: it called in mental health workers from across New Jersey. Once they arrived, each was assigned a family to help. Sometimes that help was counseling. Other times, it was a matter of getting a bottle of water or finding out exactly wh…

Video: Oakland Woman Honors Brother Killed On 9/11 FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — When Jean Schlag Nebbia of Oakland talks about her brother, Steven Schlag, killed on 9/11, many emotions cross her face. There is joy as she remembers how protective he was, laughter at how he teased her, and pain that he was taken from his family too soon. Schlag, who lived in Franklin Lakes, was 41 and a partner at Cantor Fitzgerald when he reported to work that fateful day. Fifteen years later, Nebbia is committed to keeping her brother’s memory alive by talking about him. She is one of 800 people personally affected by the attacks who volunteer as tour guides at…

Last, they decorated pre-baked cupcakes using all the techniques and boxed them to take home. Kara Schnaidt of Franklin Lakes, owner of Kara Kakes, led the camp along with her assistant and co-teacher, Sarah Ebel of New Milford. Sandra Schnaidt of Franklin Lakes, Kara’s mother, helped. …

Photos: Emerson Bids Farewell To ‘Bruce The Spruce’ EMERSON, N.J. — Bruce the Spruce, the beloved tree in downtown Emerson that has greeted people into the Pascack Valley for decades, was taken down Thursday morning. The tree is a casualty of the Kinderkamack Road Shared Service Improvement Project. It went down despite efforts by Maria Buchert and her Girl Scout Troop 6947 to save it. “I had to leave the area,” Buchert told Daily Voice Thursday. “I couldn’t be there. It’s so depressing.” Bruce, which was estimated to be 50 years old, was once the borough Christmas tree. But that practice stopped due to safety, electrical, and parking iss…

Hillsdale Centenarian Celebrates At Rockleigh Center ROCKLEIGH, N.J. — Bessye Shulman of Hillsdale sat quietly, dabbing at her eyes, as family and friends at the Gallen Adult Day Center in Rockleigh celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday. There was cake, music, and plenty of testimonials pointing out her grace, motherliness, intuition, and wisdom. “My mother died at 57 and, if I was to choose a mother, I would choose you,” said Carol Stein, Shulman’s friend for four years at Gallen, at the Jewish Home Family. Stein presented Shulman with a wrist corsage. “That was really nice,” Shulman replied. Cathy O’Donnell, who has been going to the …
