Monday’s The Night The Lights Go On In Ridgewood Park Monday’s The Night The Lights Go On In Ridgewood Park
Monday’s The Night The Lights Go On In Ridgewood Park RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Those people swarming around Memorial Park at Van Neste Square in Ridgewood this weekend, looking up at trees, come from all over the world. They’re a team of arborists, architects, landscape designers, and electricians. And they’re all students here to help bring about a $250,000 transformation to the park. Those 16 old incandescent streetlamps may have been charming back in the day. Ditto for the 70-year-old wiring. The transformation, known as the Van Neste Lighting Project, will update everything. Bye-bye, lamps. Hello, 270 dimmable, low-wattage LED bulbs to ill…

Think again, two narcotics detectives told a room of drug counselors, therapists, guidance counselors, and clergy at the “Tree of Addiction” conference in Teaneck Friday. “Everybody thinks marijuana is regular green old school marijuana,” said Det. 1st Grade Jason Hornstra of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force. “Today it comes in all shapes, forms, colors,” he added. “There’s Purple Kush, Strawberry Kush, Orange, White Widow.” It’s coming mostly from California, also known as the Emerald Triangle, he added, and mostly is d…

Almost all the candidates cited an urgent need for the board to adopt a spirit of openness and respect. Sophie Heymann of the Bergen County League of Women Voters moderated. Candidates answered three pre-determined questions and more submitted by audience members as th…

Some 60 people a month partake of the well-stocked shelves, she added. Each person is allowed to come every two weeks. For the holidays, the numbers go up. “We get 75 to 80 a month for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter,” Bowen said.…

Franklin Lakes Counselor: Non-Opioids Still Ruin Lives FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Margaret Schneider of Franklin Lakes, a licensed clinical social worker and alcohol and drug counselor, is inviting people with addiction problems into her private practice. Recently, she even offered a free phone consult to teens and adults who message her on Facebook. The offer represents the tip of the iceberg of an emerging trend: as state funding for mental health services declines, patients need to find help in the private sector. Though funding is going down, need isn’t following suit. Last year, there were 288 overdoses, including 87 deaths in Bergen County,…
Bogota Lunchbox Man Displays His Best 100 Bogota Lunchbox Man Displays His Best 100
Bogota Lunchbox Man Displays His Best 100 HACKENSACK, N.J. — Joe Shuler of Bogota loves sharing his lunchbox collection. A hundred of them, all in mint condition, are on display through Saturday at the Johnson Public Library in Hackensack. The exhibit includes the first one Shuler bought: GI Joe. It reminded him of his brother, who was fighting in the Vietnam War at the time. The boxes, all made of metal, point to some American cultural phenomenon during their heyday: 1958 to 1985. “The boxes show the movies, TV shows, comedians, and fads,” explained Shuler, the 83-year-old owner of Alert Graphics. The display collection includ…
Emerson Businesses: Kinderkamack Roadwork Is Killing Us Emerson Businesses: Kinderkamack Roadwork Is Killing Us
Emerson Businesses: Kinderkamack Roadwork Is Killing Us EMERSON, N.J. — In Emerson businesses along the Kinderkamack Road corridor, lasagnas are sitting uneaten, no one’s buying fall sweaters, and precious few women are getting their nails done. The road is now under major renovations and causing traffic backups so severe that a one-mile ride can take 20 minutes. Work started last month and is expected to last 10 months. Entrepreneurs say they share the vision for an improved road. They just hope they’re still in business next summer to reap the benefit. “Look,” said Tina Pyo, owner of Alamode Nail and Spa at 111 Kinderkamack, gesturing aroun…

Sometimes within hours of being bottled. Rosemarie Romano bought the business — then a simple milk delivery service — 15 years ago. Back then, the trend toward fresh, organic, nutrient-dense foods was just beginning. “We’ve evolved from offering 6 items to 100,” Adams said. “That includes milk, cream, hand-churned butter, cheese, handmade yogurts, eggs, grass-fed meats, …
