After learning about a shortage of food at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey following Hurricane Irene, Cristina asked principals throughout the district if food collection boxes could be placed in their schools.
“You never know who your donation could help. It could be a neighbor, co-worker, friend or relative too proud to let you know they are in need,” she told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The drive continues through Jan. 20. So does a special contest, in which each donated can brings the individual class a point.
The winner gets the Cardinal Cup, given to the highest scoring grade level at the end of the school year.
“In today’s society we take so many things for granted,” Cristina told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “ I hear people complain about the materialistic things their parents refuse to purchase for them. The thought that so many others around them are in need does not seem to cross their mind.”
“It is my goal to collect as many non-perishables donations as possible to assist these people in need,” said, Cristina, who also has a collection box outside her Celia Court home. “People willing to donate can bring food at any time.
“All donations are greatly appreciated and no donation is considered too small.”
