Westwood lightning strike topples wires, ignites transformer

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A lightning strike in Westwood during this afternoon’s storm sheared part of a tree, toppled sparking electrical wires and ignited a small transformer fire — knocking out power to residences and nearby businesses.

“The fire jumped and then the transformer blew,” said a Mill Street resident who lives across the street from the scene of the 1:30 p.m. strike.

Firefighters quickly tended to the blaze as Westwood police — already stretched thin by PSE&G roadwork being done throughout town — cordoned off the street.
