They arrived at the seven-story Westwood House at the end of Madison Avenue to find that smoke from the fire on the south side of the building had spread from the third floor to several apartments above, Police Chief Frank Regino told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
“The building was safely evacuated,” he said. “No one was hurt.”
Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and a resident for smoke inhalation, but no one was hospitalized, the chief said.
Other towns were summoned — including Hillsdale, Emerson, Oradell and Woodcliff Lake — and several ambulances remained on standby at the nearby Trader Joe’s as a precaution, the police chief said.
NJ Transit trains on the Pascack Line also were temporarily slowed down through town.
At nearly the same time, an ambulance was needed for a head cut at the KMart Plaza.
